What is the Buccal Fat Pad Removal Process?
Buccal fat pad removal, or buccal lipectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that aims to get rid of chubby cheeks, which may be caused by genetics or weight gain. The removal process is relatively simple and can be completed in approximately 30 minutes, but first you must understand what the buccal fat pad is.
Your buccal fat pads are located underneath the muscles in your cheeks and are responsible for the “chipmunk” look. These fat pads are different from the fat located under your skin in problem areas such as your abdomen, thighs or “love handles.” Buccal fat pads are encased pockets of fat located only in your cheeks, and traditional fat removal techniques such as liposuction won’t work with this type of fat.
Before your buccal lipectomy is scheduled, you’ll have a thorough consultation with our cosmetic surgeon—Dr. Pakeman—to make sure you’re the perfect candidate for the procedure and to discuss your aesthetic goals for your lower face.
The surgery is minimally invasive, but still needs to be performed under general anesthesia so you are not awake during the procedure. Dr. Pakeman will make a small incision from the inside of your mouth for each cheek. Then, he will swiftly and effectively remove a portion (or all) of your buccal fat pads before closing the cuts with sutures.
Your cheeks will initially look larger than they were before due to natural swelling and bruising, but your results will become apparent in the weeks following your procedure. You will notice a thinning of your cheeks, which will give you a more contoured appearance. Your friends and family may even start asking if you’ve lost weight as chubby cheeks can make you appear heavier than you are.
