25 Years of LASIK Laser Eye Surgery
25 years ago, LASIK laser eye surgery was FDA-approved to correct common vision problems. This innovative laser technology has since given more than 28 million people worldwide the gift of perfect vision. LASIK technology advances each year. Now, more than 30 lasers are FDA-approved for vision correction.
Whether you are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism, laser eye surgery technology such as LASIK and PRK can give you better eyesight and the opportunity to enjoy the ins and outs of your life without the hassle of contacts or prescription eyeglasses.
How Does LASIK Work?
Your eyesight depends heavily on the shape of your cornea. The LASIK procedure works by correcting your corneal shape to give you clear, crisp vision. Our laser eye surgeon, Dr. Pakeman, uses CustomVue LASIK technology to create a 3-dimensional map of your eyes. This allows our laser to use precise measurements to give you the best possible results with less risk of complications.
The process begins with anesthetic eye drops to numb your eye and prevent you from feeling any discomfort. Dr. Pakemen will then create a flap using the top layer of your eye with a microkeratome surgical device. The LASIK laser then uses pre-determined measurements from the 3D map of your eye to reshape your cornea and fix your vision. Once your cornea is the right shape, the flap is folded back on top of your cornea to allow for fast recovery.
